Brain Flakes

  • The Goethe Institute uses the Settlers of Catan game to teach people about resource use and conservation. Sixty people attended a couple months ago, but cool to note, anyway.
  • Scientists at University of California — Davis add a ball lens to the iPhone’s camera and create a 350x microscope, good enough for seeing at the cellular level to detect sickle cell and many other things. They are looking forward to creating apps and devloping other low-cost devices, such as a spectrometer, for use in the field. Tricorders are coming!
  • Facebook rage! Man is in jail after assaulting his wife when she wouldn’t “like” his post. “On my wall” means a lot of different things in prison, guy. Enjoy your stay!

Features

  • Wizards of the Coast is releasing The Legend of Drizzt board game on October 18th. It uses the same rules as previous board games Castle Ravenloft and Wrath of Ashardalon. Is it too much of the same thing? Other companies do it, too, and maybe there are plenty of customers to buy them?
  • ngmoco is retiring several of its social games, which is probably a good business decision for them, but what does that mean for the game player who bought the games or put money into them? Are you getting your money’s worth out of these games and does their retirement bother you? Comment below!
